I think “being at a loss” would be the best words to describe my state when I first came to Hong Kong, as I could not get used to all these unfamiliar environments, cultures, and faces. Despite the stiff situation and my confusion, I was luckily admitted to the big family of Ju Ching Chu. Here, I not only gained the knowledge that constantly helped me make progress toward my dream but also learnt the conduct that helped me integrate into local society confidently. The power that I received from my teachers and classmates has always been a vital part of all my achievements. I would like to thank our school for accompanying me through these three years of precious memories. I also hope my fellow juniors can treasure every moment in school and have colourful lives.

Our alma mater’s teachers are full of enthusiasm for teaching. Apart from imparting academic knowledge, they also nurture me with great patience. I still remembered that my class teacher once enjoined me to be a person who could contribute to society. Since then, I had been trying to hold myself to higher standards, but it was easier said than done. I would like to thank every teacher whom I met here. You helped me grow with your encouragement and let me learn the spirit of constant self- improvement. These eventually contributed to my success in getting into college with the major that fit my interest. In the coming year, I will be studying the PhD programme in Building Environment and Energy Engineering at Poly U. This will help me make a better plan for my life.

I would like to thank my alma mater for its nurture to me in the past years. Aside from the regular lessons, our school provided supplementary classes for us depending on our needs to further facilitate our understanding of subjects. Since our teachers valued our language ability, they taught us well and helped us build a strong foundation of language. Besides, our school promoted the all-round development of students. They conducted various interest classes and permitted us to form our interest clubs to help us find our Time flies and a new journey begins, but moments in Ju Ching Chu are still deeply engraved in my memory. Here, we had dutiful yet affable principal and teachers, lovely staff, and friendly students. They imparted and taught us a precious spirit— “improve yourself constantly”. Our school not only provided us with a wide variety of lessons but also nurtured us with all-round development. For example, I got the opportunity to participate in a Beijing student exchange program. My experiences of visiting the National Museum of China and the Summer Palace immersed myself in the long history of China and broadened my horizon. Learning is a lifelong journey. I wish that my fellow juniors can seize their moments to pursue their dream and give everything their best shot.

After that, I obtained a bachelor’s degree of science major in Chemistry (BSc in Chemistry) (1st class honors) from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2020. Then, I stayed in HKUST and started my research postgraduate studies. I am now a year 3 PhD candidate in Chemistry from Prof. Jonathan Halpert’s group in HKUST. My research is focusing on design and synthesis of perovskites nanomaterials and its applications on light-emitting diodes (LED).

In a blink of an eye, it has been two years since I graduated from my alma mater. I can still recall that moment of perplexity, reluctance, depression, and helplessness when I knew that I wasn’t admitted to my desired university. Nevertheless, my class teacher told me, “It’s fine. You are a tough girl and you will shine wherever you go!” Therefore, I put up with the situation and started my new life at the university.
In my first year at the university, its new environment brought me freshness. Despite that, I did my best to restrain myself from temptations so that I can obtain adequate time to cope with the workload. Having online lessons was the most difficult thing to deal with. Although we had relatively bigger autonomy here, it was also a test of my self-discipline. After a year of effort, I achieved excellent grades and, therefore, tried transferring to my desired university, The Education University of Hong Kong. I could hardly get to sleep and felt extremely anxious during those months of waiting. To my surprise, I succeeded and was admitted to the university and programme which I once missed. As the saying goes, we don’t carry on because of hope; we carry on to reach hope.
My fellow juniors, please stay strong and carry on by all means. And so you will reach your goals someday.
